Making Spirits Bright

Our family Christmas tree 2017

It’s been a full three days of decorating at my house!  Generally, I have my decorations up by the Sunday after Thanksgiving, but since we went to the beach I got a late start.  Normally I wouldn’t have been so anxious to get it all done by tonight, but I’m having my Fiesta board over for dinner on Thursday night and I want it to be just right!

Of course, instead of just doing what I did last year I decided a change was in order.  Don’t ask me why I do this to myself but I decided I wanted my front door and staircase to be silver and gold!  This meant buying a new green artificial wreath and finding just the right plastic gold and silver ornaments to use.  In the process, I also needed new lights for the swag over the door as well as the staircase.  Little bits of inspiration were hitting me all week as I pulled out items I haven’t used in a while.  I have a set of Southern Living at Home very heavy silver glass ornaments from way back.  I used to simply put them in a large vase in my bookcase but this year they’ve taken on a new look hanging from rhinestone ribbon and evenly spaced out on my staircase!  I actually found three extra of these ornaments at the thrift store a few months back so it must have been meant to be!  I’m loving the look…and the sparkle!

My front door wreath turned out pretty nice too, if I do say so myself!  This despite THREE finger burns with the hot glue gun!  Yikes!  I don’t know what was wrong with me today but that hot glue kept wanting to stick to ME rather than the ornaments!  I had two sizes of ornaments and decided it needed some smaller ones to fill in the gap so I headed to the Dollar Store for those.  I used the leftover plastic ornaments to make bundles of silver and gold to use on the outdoor swag and one I hung in the entryway.

Tonight, we decorated the family Christmas tree…me, my husband and my daughter, Emily.  It was a little bittersweet for me.  Generally, the last act of decorating for us is on Sunday night and all the kids make a point to be home to help out.  We take bets on how many of my Hallmark ornaments Eddie will break.  None this year…YAY!!!  We added just a few new Hallmark ornaments to my huge collection this year so they are safe until next year!  I always try to add the most ornaments to the tree after the rest of the family gives up.  All that is except for my son-in-law, Ryan!  He always sticks with me to pack the tree full!  Still…it was nice to spend time talking with my sweet Emily and watching Eddie look for gaps in the tree so we could fill them with ornaments.  We listened to Christmas music on Pandora and sang along.   Our annual family photo in front of the tree will have to wait until everyone is together over the holidays.  I look forward to that…

It’s a Wonderful Life!

The 50th anniversary commemorative book on Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life.

I’m in the midst of decorating my house for Christmas and I have worked hard to get everything organized by room.  Several years ago, I took a week in January and sorted and labeled all my decorations to make it easier each year.

The largest box in my collection is the one that holds my “It’s a Wonderful Life” village.  This Frank Capra movie is one of my all time favorites and when I found the  village at Walgreens many years ago, I was so excited.  In fact, I was a little late to the village collection party it would seem.  There had been several buildings already out in previous years from what I gathered.  They were made by Enesco.  I started my search and eventually accumulated 7 of the buildings from Bedford Falls including, Gowers Drug Store, The Bijoux theatre, Ma Bailey’s home, Bedford Falls Trust and Savings Bank, the high school, the church and of course, the Sycamore House.

I also managed to find Ernie Bishop’s yellow cab.  Other IAWF items are in ornament form including Martini’s bar.  I also found the Mark Twain book that Clarence was reading, the Bedford Falls sign, and the movie poster in porcelain.  Two unique ornaments are the televisions I discovered displaying a scene from the movie – one with George Bailey and Mary Hatch singing Buffalo Gals and the other when George is running through town in the snow after he wishes to be alive again.  Centering all of these ornaments on greenery I put over my bakers rack display is a Hallmark ornament with Mary, George and Zuzu representing the iconic scene when the famous words are spoken by Zuzu – “every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings!”  The ornament also has a little bell on the bottom.

I’ve looked for additional pieces over the years and some are pretty sky-high online!  I also discovered that Target had an IAWF village too but I never saw that one in the stores.  I would love to add a few more items I’ve seen to my village but right now I love the way the display looks every year on my kitchen bakers rack.

Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives. When he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he? – Clarence Oddbody

Zuniga-Odom Christmas Tree 2016

Zuniga-Odom Christmas Tree 2016

It’s officially Christmas at our house!  While everyone else was shopping on Black Friday, I was at home getting all our Christmas decorations out and up around the house.  It doesn’t take as long as it used to since I organized my decorations by room and labeled everything.  It took a little time one year after Christmas but it was so worth it!

On Friday, my husband did his part and put our pre-lit tree together. Later that day I added some large white star lights to it and got it ready for the family to decorate it together today.  We’ve had a full house this weekend and it has been so nice.

So after a late lunch of left-over taco soup, I put on some Christmas music and we got started.  As I mentioned in my Hallmark Obsession post a few days ago, I add to my Hallmark ornament collection every year.  I always put the new ornaments out on the dining room table for the kids to see and then they race to add their favorite to the tree.  Then the singing and the storytelling begins as everyone sifts through the two large storage containers full of Hallmark ornaments dating back to 1973.  At some point someone – usually my husband – remarks that the tree is getting full and there is no more room.  I am always determined to prove him wrong and keep adding in little nooks and crannies.  I’ll also rearrange a section to add a larger ornament to a limb where a smaller one is taking up too much space.  My kids swear I rearrange most of the tree when they are gone but that’s not true.  Instead, I walk around the tree to see which ornaments they have selected to adorn the tree that particular year.  We have so many that I love to see what strikes them as special.  My son-in-law, Ryan, is a real trooper and hangs in there with me to keep adding ornaments when the others have given up!  This year he broke one of the ornaments – which is really not a big deal – and I said “that’s why we have super glue!”  He said “now I really feel like part of the family!”  Usually, my husband, Eddie is the one who breaks something!  Everyone had a good laugh about that…

Our ginormous collection of Hallmark ornaments in these two huge storage containers. I used to put them back into their individual boxes for many years but it got too tedious so I just keep the boxes in the attic now.

After the tree is complete, I unveil the family ornament.  Each year since 1989, when my son was born, I have bought a handmade ornament with our names and the year on it.  I never really thought about what a tradition this was until I had collected about 10 years worth.  When we got Lucy, our pup, I added her to the ornament.  Now we have added my son-in-law, Ryan and their pup, Lucia.  So my challenge has been to find an ornament with space for 8 people on it.  I like to select it myself and make it a surprise for everyone each year.  I’m so glad I accidentally fell into this family tradition and love looking at the different designs from over the years.

Finally, we take family photos in front of the completed tree.  I can always count on this being one time of the year when we are all together and can get these photos so I really do cherish them.  Kind of like first day of school photos…I always knew I would get those too!

Soon after the photos were taken, all the kids scattered and went to their respective homes.  The house is quiet again.  I stopped briefly to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the tree against a background of Christmas music.

Just Add People

img_3172Tomorrow, the Odom clan will descend upon our home to celebrate Thanksgiving!  For the longest time, we have always celebrated the weekend before the holiday, on Sunday.  However, beginning last year we moved the gathering to Saturday to make it easier for several of our clan to travel.

Thanksgiving has always been a favorite holiday of mine.  For as long as I can remember, this was the holiday that brought the family together the most.  I still feel that way so even after the family leaves on Saturday, a small group of us will meet again at our home to do it all over again!

This year I found quite a few new things to add to my Thanksgiving decorations.  I was going though my boxes and decided some things needed to go and luckily I lucked up on a few new items at the thrift stores!  To begin with, I found this huge porcelain turkey several months ago.  I could see it as the centerpiece of my Thanksgiving table when I bought it.  Of course, after I got it home, it found a home on my teacart.

Another item I found were a bunch of fall corn with long husks.  They were piled in a plastic container next to one of the displays.  I pulled one out and it had an original price tag of $10.99 on it…and I thought “$10.99?? That’s nuts!”  Of course the thrift store price was 99 cents so I bought everyone they had and thought I could use them as accent pieces on my table and buffet. A few weeks later I found a couple of small pumpkins and squash in orange in a large plastic container.  In fact this time the store was lined with plastic containers because they didn’t have room to put them on the shelves.  They have the words “Thanks to God” and “Give” written on them and as I looked through all the containers I found more and more!  So I left with about 20 of these pumpkins and squash at 69 cents a piece thinking they would look great in a basket!  I added the pinecones to give it a little texture.

Target’s Dollar Spot section is also a good place for season finds.  You have to hit them early to get the best selections thought.  Let’s just say I’ve learned the hard way!  I found fall placemats that say “Grateful” on them and some plain ones too.  I was able to get an entire set for 12 people from two different stores.  They also had table runners – I picked up two.  They aren’t as long as I would like but when I showed my daughter, Anna Marie, the table she like it.  Target also had some plaid leaves and I figured they would come in handy.  Yep!  I placed them on my coffee table to accent the bronze pumpkins that I’ve had for a few years.  I think I got them at Target at one of their after season sales!

The final new items are a table runner found at Big Lots for half off and a Target wreath for $2 that is hanging on my large mirror over the buffet.  With this, all my new items have been integrated into my Thanksgiving day décor and now all we have to do is…just add people.

Thanksgiving DIY Project

Finished DIY project - spray painted silver plated casserole holders.

Finished DIY project – spray painted silver plated casserole holders.

I’m staring down the face of a majorly crazy week so what do I do?  I embark on a DIY project!  Who doesn’t do that, right?  I mean, when I’m heading out-of-town on a trip, that’s when I think I can tackle a room renovation.  What’s up with that?  Whatever the reason, I tackled the project.  It wasn’t that difficult and I love the finished product!

When I was visiting my sister in North Carolina, we spent a lot of time thrift store shopping.  It’s safe to say its our favorite pastime and doing this together made it even more special. We are both drawn to different things and we both find the potential and the beauty in these “things” too.  In my case, I’ve grown to appreciate silver plated dish and casserole holders.  I especially love the painted ones we found at an antique/thrift store one day.  Such bright and cheery colors!

When I got home from North Carolina, I thought it would be fun to find a few of these silver plated pieces and do a little painted DIY project myself.  Of course, now that I was looking for them they were nowhere to be found!  Eventually I found a small one and then a week later, a round one.  This weekend I headed to Michaels for some Krylon spray paint.  I was a bit overwhelmed with all the colors available!  I settled on a shimmer metallic called candy corn.  I thought this color would be a terrific accent to my Thanksgiving table for both these pieces.

So this morning I washed the pieces, let them dry and then took them outside to spray paint.  I decided to spray paint the handle of the round piece first.  As the color went on I thought this wasn’t exactly what I thought it would look like.  I mean, the picture on the can had the color much darker!  But as I continued spraying, I really liked what I was seeing.  My daughter, Anna Marie was home this weekend and she commented that it was the “in” color for things these days.  She really liked the way they both turned out!  Actually, I did too!  They are more of a shimmer bronze than candy corn!

Krylon Candy Corn shimmer metallic spray paint. It turned out different than I expected but I'm pleased with it nonetheless!

I’d have to say that this DIY project was a success!  I hope I can find a long casserole holder this week and make it “three” silver plated candy corn dishes!  We shall see!

Thanksgiving Teaser!

Always a good idea to have a great wine when decorating for a holiday!

Always a good idea to have a great wine when decorating for a holiday!

I’ve been working on my Thanksgiving decorations for the past two weekends.  Every year I try to change things up a bit to make use of whatever Thanksgiving decorations I didn’t use in the past year.  This year though, I found quite a few more fall/Thanksgiving decorations at my favorite thrift store!  I’ve been excited about using these items but struggling a bit about how to change up the décor.  I’ve been falling into the trap that I have to use everything when that shouldn’t be the case.

At any rate, I’m putting the finishing touches on my dining room table and will continue the decorating outside to my deck tomorrow.  I also have a little craft project I want to finish up tomorrow with my daughter’s help.

A few items I found at the thrift store recently that I'm using to decorate for Thanksgiving!

Meanwhile…here are a few pictures of new items I’m incorporating into my décor this year.  Call it a Thanksgiving teaser!  I’ll reveal the whole look soon!

Oh!  And I’m also enjoying a nice Australian Viogner wine called Yalumba while pulling the Thanksgiving look together!  A nice smooth white wine to help me with my decorating decisions!  Cheers!

Finishing Touches Day

Ornaments from my mother in their original boxes - I like to decorate with these each year by simply placing them in crystal/glass bowls.

Ornaments from my mother in their original boxes – I like to decorate with these each year by simply placing them in crystal/glass bowls.

Yesterday I spent the entire day getting our house decorated for Christmas.  At times it can be a little overwhelming with all the boxes and decorations all over the place.  But I remind myself that this is my day to get it all together and the day is long!  Plus, I have those sappy Hallmark movies to keep me going!

O the Saturday after all this decorating takes place, I work on the finishing touches.  Things like bows on lamps, centerpieces on the tables and hand towels in the kitchen and powder room.  Another favorite things to do is to pull out all the ornaments from my mom that she collected from before I was born and simply put them on display in crystal bowls.

This is one of my favorite of the old ornamets...beautiful detail!

This is one of my favorite of the old ornamets…beautiful detail!

Decorating doesn’t have to be complicated and this is one of the things that makes me the happiest each year when I add the finishing touches.  First of all, I love that the ornaments are still in the original boxes.  You can still see the prices on the boxes.  I have three boxes of “Shiny Brite” ornaments…mind you, not all the ornaments are original to these boxes but they are definitely old ornaments that we used to use when I was little.  (Did I just say “old” in reference to myself?!  Yikes!)  These boxes have a 49 cent price tag on them.  And who remembers Woolworth’s store?  The box I have for a few more ornaments has a $1.49 price tag on it.  These are called “imported tree ornaments” – but I don’t see “where” they were imported.  Regardless, it’s still nice to have this box.  I love to put them all in a large crystal bowl and set them on my coffee table in my living room each year.  I always tell my kids about the ornaments and of course, when they were little they used to roll their eyes a bit…  Now, I think they are paying more attention to these things and why they are important to me and our family history.

To preserve these memories a little bit more, I’ve put some of the smaller ornaments – chipped paint and all – in shadow boxes.  One box has small ornaments that my mother used to use to decorate her hutch every year.  She would put these small ornaments into glasses all over the hutch and I always loved how creative she got with the decorating.  She was (and is) so good at “merchandising” as they say in the retail world.  I also have a shadow box with small ornaments from my grandmother (Louise Stone) and my aunt Gail (Gail Stone Thomas).  I love putting these boxes out each year.  It’s a great way to display a part of your family holiday history.  Finally, I have a small egg shaped vase in my corner curio with ornaments from my great-grandmother – Maude Weaver – on display.  The paint on these ornaments is almost all chipped off but it adds quite a bit of antique character to the them…

Small ornaments that my mother (first shadow box) used on her hutch each year and ornaments that my aunt and grandmother (second box) used in their Christmas decorating.

Finally, the one shadow box that makes me a bit nostalgic is the one I created with ornaments that were about to be thrown out after my mother-in-law (Johnnie Odom) passed away.  All her sons were cleaning out her house and there was a box of ornaments that she had put aside with a handwritten note saying – “some ornaments the 5 girls might want to keep.”  By this time, all the girls had gone through everything and picked out what they wanted.  When my brother-in-law Allen showed me the box, I told him I would take them.  I mean, there were several things I remembered vividly from her annual Christmas tree – the star she used at the top of the tree, the plastic snowman and Santa Claus, the felt reindeer…these aren’t expensive ornaments by any means.  But they are priceless to me and now my children.  It’s amazing how different things look when you preserve them in a special way…like in a shadow box.  The Christmas after Johnnie passed, I displayed the shadow box and all the grandkids loved it.  Plus, I added her handwritten note to the box.  Their reaction made me feel like I had done something good for them and I love displaying it each year.

Ornaments that my mother-in-law - Johnnie Odom - used on her tree. These were about to be discarded but I couldn't let that happen. Included in the box is a handwritten note about these ornaments to her 5 granddaughters...

Meanwhile…finished touches day is just about over…and tomorrow we decorate our family tree to round everything out.
